'Full Night Falling' is an exhibition of drawings executed in charcoal and pencil with a series of pastel explorations in colour.
The absence of colour which has been a conscious thematic choice for Michael Wann, his stark use of black on white, his immutable instruction of pencil line and his contrasting black to grey of charcoal is matched in this exhibition for the first time with works of an expanded colour palette.
Still here are Michaels stark recurring themes of memory, of locality and neglect. With the introduction of colour now comes a different artistic dynamic between the artist, his work and ultimately you the viewer. Use of colour is tonal, tentative and it gives us an overriding sense of the artist and viewer finding their way gently into new realms. It is a gradual and delightful immersion in hue, in atmosphere and tone. His scenes are set in the evening half light – charged with a sense of place, a sense of being in the landscape, of being with the artist, of watching, of waiting ….
